I was introduced to GIS in the Fall of 1998. My Environmental Science Lab Instructor spent an afternoon giving us an overview of this "new" technology. Needless to say an afternoon was not enough to teach me everything I needed/wanted to know about GIS but it was enough of a teaser to get me interested in the program.
