On August 9,1974 Gerald Rudolph Ford became the first vice president in American history to succeed to the nation’s highest office because of the resignation of a president. Ford was also the first man to occupy the White House without being elected either president or Vice President. Both events resulted from two of the worst scandals .... Middle of paper .... II, Ford served four years in the Navy as an aviation operations officer, including two years aboard the aircraft carrier USS Monterey. He was discharged as a lieutenant commander. After practicing law again, Ford ran for congress in 1948 with the support of Sen. Arthur H. Vandenberg (R-Mich.). he defeated an isolationist republican, Rep. Bartel J. Jonkman, in the primary and then defeated the democratic candidate in the general election.
