On August 9,1974 Gerald Rudolph Ford became the first vice president in American history to succeed to the nation’s highest office because of the resignation of a president. After practicing law again, Ford ran for congress in 1948 with the support of Sen. Arthur H. Vandenberg (R-Mich.). he defeated an isolationist republican, Rep. Bartel J. Jonkman, in the primary and then defeated the democratic candidate in the general election.
