John Wilkes Booth

assassinated president Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s theater in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865. Booth was born near Bel Air, MD. His father, Junius Brutus Booth, and his brother Edwin Booth were famous actors, and John himself was one of the most promising performers of the time.

Booth refused to be taken alive and was shot by one of the soldiers, or more likely by his own hand. He died on the morning of April 26. His body was brought back to Washington where it was secretly buried in a warehouse and then buried in a common graveyard for criminals. In 1869 the body was removed to the family plot in Baltimore.
