Sunlight is used to symbolize the hopes and dreams of a better life while darkness is used to illustrate the hopelessness and disparity she felt in Russia. Sara Rosen's decision of explaining her family and the traditions set forth, was an exceptional way to start the novel. It gave the reader a more detailed image of what to expect. The reader now fully understands what the Rosen family was experiencing while trying to survive the Holocaust.
