(21) When Miss Caroline offers the money to Walter, Scout quickly steps in, trying to save her from an embarrassing moment. The Cunningham's financial situation is hard enough for Walter. He no doubt feels as if it's his fault, he has let the family down. "We brought him home for dinner one time..." (154) This quote .....

.... in battle. Macbeth was loyal to the King (Duncan), and did as he wished. In battle, he kills a traitor to the Scotland who was a high ranking individual. For killing the traitor so bravely, Macbeth is awarded the title the Thane of Cawdor. The irony of this situation is that the title first did indeed belonged to ‘a most disloyal traitor’(pg. 3, line 53). As Macbeth heads home with his new title and a lot more ambition. .... The theme is one of man verses a hostile environment. His body destroyed but his spirit is not broken. The method used to develop the theme of the novel is through the use of symbolism. There are several uses of symbols in the novel from the turtle at the beginning to the rain at the end. As each symbol is presented through the novel they show examples of the good and the bad things that exist within the novel. The opening chapter paints a vivid picture of the situation facing the drought-stricken farmers of Oklahoma. Dust is described a covering everything, smother .....

.... brothers. They are also the more loving towards their father. Steinbeck’s purpose in this is to illustrate the need of the Cain character in the story. Abel, Adam and Aron, is the opposite of his brother and naturally good and pure. The purpose of Adam and Aron in East of Eden is to clarify the belief that purity must know wickedness (Marks, Jay Lester. p.122). Steinbeck illustrates the need for both good and bad with the actions and beliefs of these supposed “good” characters. The representations of Abel, Adam and Aron are both described as unloving. .....

He uses characterization to show the different kinds of morals people had. Huck lived with the Miss Watson, he did not live with his parents because his father was an alcoholic and we do not know where his mother is. His father was in and out of town. Nobody really knew where he was and if he was alive or not. Huck has an imagination, yet he is very level headed. He knows what is right and wrong but he is also very impressionable. .....

Perhaps the book seems so bleak because the events in the book are a somewhat logical projection from current conditions and historical environment that Orwell observed in 1948. Perhaps people would be more comftorble with the book if they could rule out in their minds the possibility of the profecy becoming a reality. In a critique of his own work, Orwell called Nineteen Eighty-Four “A work of a future terrible [sic] because it rests on a fiction and can not be substantiated by reality or truth. “ But perhaps this future .....
