We know from the start of the novella that the darkness that Conrad refers to is symbolic, because, while the silent narrator aboard The Nellie comments on the many lights emanating from the shore, the lighthouse, the other boats and the setting sun, Marlowe comments that they themselves are in “one of the dark places of the earth”. Therefore we know that Marlowe has his own opinion and explanation of what the darkness is, and if we assume that this story is autobiographical, and Marlowe is a mouthpiece for Conrad, .....

Some are the offering of sacrificing to idols, the observations of omens, burning of the dead, the many references to fate, and blood revenge. These are all things that Christians are against and are often considered sins. Though mostly minor things, these are seen quite frequently and show that the author was familiar with knowledge of the bible and Christian terminology. If the poem was originally Christian, then probably non of these things would be mentioned. On the other hand, there are absolutely no references .....

In Leonard Mead's society, people who are different are not accepted. Leonard Mead does not follow society rules and what everyone else does in their life and because of this he is considered to be different and an outcast. .....

Being a woman myself, I know that it is necessary to have friends and others around me other than my husband. Mrs. Wright did not have any connection to the outside world. She lived on an almost desert road in a house that was not very suitable and did the best she could in making it her home. Minnie Wright is a seemingly very lonely woman who needed someone or something to depend on and curb her loneliness. When Minnie got a canary for companionship, it end .....

Proper Englishwomen were not to associate with natives while unchaperoned. Adela, Forster’s character, had a similar experience. She desired to see the “real” India. Moreover, the phrase "blood shod" shows how the troops have been on their feet for days, never resting. Also, the fact that the gassed man was "flung" into the wagon reveals the urgency and occupation with fighting. The only thing they can do is toss him into a wagon. The fact one word can add to the meaning so much shows how the diction of this poem adds greatly to its effectiveness. Likewise, the use of figurative language in this poem also helps .....
