The use of diction is also vital to the development of the characters in Lord of the Flies. The passage opens with Ralph “smudging the sweat from his face with a dirty forearm.” This conveys to the reader an exhausted boy who is at wit’s end. The words “smudging,” “sweat,” and “dirty,” connote savagery, and they show Ralph’s animalistic characteristics coming out. .... All of a sudden everything she has in not good enough, she looks at her shopping bag as "shabby" and "old". Her parcel is "very small". At this point, she wants more. She begins to think without reason, and loses her sense of responsibility when she puts the stockings on in the ladies room. Mrs. Sommers is "not going through any acute mental process or reasoning with herself", she is "not thinking at all" at this point. Mrs. Sommers's mind is not working like it used to at the beginning. All of a sudden nothing is too expensive, she eats the expensive restaurant, b .....

.... and wealth that was so frighteningly realistic. It was one of the most disturbing novels I’ve read in a long time. It possesses an unnerving air of documentary reality. All the obstacles facing the characters were fairly easy for me to relate to. Less Than Zero is not a long book but it contains reflections upon the entire world. The images described of youth adrift, of neon towers, palm trees, black nights, parties, clubs, drugs and cars and sex will never leave me. This amazing story sounded extremely real and scary to the reader, me. I recommend it highly and will .....

When Goodman Brown finally meets with the Devil, he declares that the reason he was late was because "Faith kept me back awhile." This statement has a double meaning because his wife physically prevented him from being on time for his meeting with the devil, but his faith to God psychologically delayed his meeting with the devil. The Devil had with him a staff that "bore the likeness of a great black snake". The staff which looked like a snake is a reference .....

In the end however it is obvious that Alex has become a true “Clockwork Orange’ and despite the previous opinion of the reader, Burgess reveals the outcome in a way that causes a sense of relief and is pleased to see Alex back to ‘normal’. It is fascinating to consider that Burgess may have written A Clockwork Orange as a prophetic view of warning to future societies. He was a peaceful person who didn’t want the stark consequences of the fictional Alex to become a grim reality. Through the first of three parts in the novel Burgess displays .....
