.... there is just one instance in In Our Time in which a character speaks in the first person. It occurs in "Big Two-Hearted River: Part II", an intensely personal story which completely immerses the reader in the actions and thoughts of Nick Adams. Hemingway's utilization of the omniscient third person narrator allows the reader to visualize all of Nick's actions and surroundings, which would have been much more difficult to accomplish using first person narration. Nick is seen setting up his camp in "Big Two-Hearted River: Part I" in intimate detail, from choosing the perf .....

This irony is clearly demonstrated at the end of the story; Swift makes it clear that this proposal would not affect him since his children were grown and his wife unable to have any more children. It would be rather absurd to think that a rational man would want to both propose this and partake in the eating of another human being. Therefore, before an analyzation can continue, one has to make the assumption that this is strictly a fictional work and Swift had no intention of pursuing his proposal any further. .... of a more perfect society. A Clockwork Orange is written in the first person by the main character, Alex. Three of his "droogs"(friends) that help him in his crimes are Dim, Pete, and Georgie. Throughout the story, the author creates his own language called "nadsat", which is used by the youth of the futuristic world. "Nadsat" is a mix of Russian, English, and the slang words of both. The whites pushed them out of where they used to reside where the land is so good that it could be even referred to as “holy, being even as it came from the Creator.” (pg. 3). In the rural areas such as this the decay comes as a result of making the blacks live in confined areas where the land is so bad it can't be farmed any more, and the taking of the strong males out of these areas to go work in the mines were things are unsafe and people rarely re .....

.... significant change, as even Holden himself says, "It's not too bad when the sun's out, but the sun only comes out when it feels like coming out.” The sun, of course, is a reference to decency through the common association of light and goodness. Thus, Holden’s perception of the world remains, essentially, unchanged. The belief that does change during the book is that Holden can evade or protect the world. He sees a corrupt environment, and at first, believes that he must either protect or abandon it. On his date with Sally, Holden reveals his feelings about his situation .....

He also took pleasure in humiliating Julie Gregg for being interested in Doc Stair and even went so far as to imitate Stair's voice on the phone and set up a phony meeting with Julie then chased her down the street when she showed up. The fact that Whitey narrates these stories in first person doesn't soften Jim's awful practical jokes but shows the barber's equally insensitive ignorance making Jim's character all the more plausible.
