Milton Vs Pope
Number of pages: 3 | Number of words: 576

.... fall from God’s graces. Pope goes on to pose the questions, “Say what strange motive, Goddess! Could compel/a well-bred Lord to assault a gentle Belle? / O say what stanger cause, yet unexplored, /could make a gentle Belle reject a Lord?” (Pope, ll. 7-10). This is an allusion to Adam’s rejection of Eve in Paradise Lost when he laments, “ ‘Out of my sight, thou serpent!’ ” and to Eve’s crime against God (Milton, Bk. X, l. 867). The motives of Sir Plume’s actions are now seen as similar to that of Adam and .....

Critique Of "Death Of The Author"
Number of pages: 3 | Number of words: 777

.... writer I have to assume that he was not a very bright man or that he at least has very little common sense outside of the literary world. If he wrote in a more simple, to the point modern style I would have read the story, absorbed its content, and would not have given it a second look. The story could be summarized into 3 lines and thus reduce the amount of paper it is replicated on the amount of bandwidth required to transmit it, the space it takes, and the time it takes to read it. I came to this conclusion after reading "The Death of an Author" for the fourth or fifth .....

.... an agent, in the promotion of good citizenship as ever was the guillotine among the terrorists of France,” (Page 52, pink highlight). Instead of using the pillory, which would lock a person's head and hands together where they could not move and be forced to not be able to show their humiliation. “No outrage more flagrant to forbid the culprit to hide his face from shame,” is in Hawthorne's commentary on page 53. Hawthorne's commentary appears twice on this page (about more than one topic) and you can see them in my highlighted sections. What really got to me was the se .....

Dickens And "The Jew"
Number of pages: 8 | Number of words: 2068

.... because he did not have any skills, nor was he welcome anywhere. On the other hand, to describe Fagin in any other light would have to give the impression that Jews just might be humans after all. In reading this story, I discovered Fagin to be somewhat likeable and misunderstood. Though revolting to look at, having a repulsive disposition, and having manners and hygiene left to be desired I could not help but to feel sorry for the old guy. All he wanted to have was security in his old age. For example, when Fagin sees Oliver looking at him while admiring his treasures, Fag .....

.... stand it. I was all over with welts." Here the reader can observe the ultimate failure of an uncivilized person. Pap is an alcoholic, a dead beat and a racist. Nevertheless, society also considered Huck "uncivilized" because he did not wear shoes, did not always attend school and he smoked. Society criticized Huck as uncivilized due to physical appearance when really Huck turned out to be more civilized than any other character in the novel because he learns how to respect Jim. Through the ironic critizims of society trying to civilize Huck, Huck teaches us a .....
